When Ceausescu was leader of Romania, the country was developing at an accelerated pace. During the first 30 years of socialism, industrial production in the country had become 100 times larger comparing to 1944.
After 1989, the growth of industrial output almost came to naught. Romanians had been proud of their country largely due to the independent policty of the socialist party: Ceausescu did not bow neither to the Soviet Union nor to the West.
